The Policy and Research Department analyzes and evaluates the operations of the various components of the Unified Judicial System. The department conducts studies ranging from case flow management reviews of individual trial courts to statewide evaluations of practices and procedures.

A core function of the department is to assemble data on the caseloads of county and local courts, including the numbers and types of new, disposed and pending cases, and, for certain case types, the ages of the cases awaiting adjudication. The statistical information is reviewed and periodically verified through audits of county dockets. Each year, the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts publishes the data in the Caseload Statistics of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania. This report is available from on the UJS Web site at www.pacourts.us. Customized statistical reports also are available on-line. A statistical compilation of medical malpractice filings and jury verdicts across the state also is available.
